Post subject: Help me build my build! Edit: I'm DONE! :)
Unread postPosted: Tue Jun 03, 2014 4:51 pm
OK gang, I have been out of the builder game for a while and I don't really have time to do research to the ends of the sky. I'm interested in ideas for a video card in the $400 range or dual cards that will beat a single in that price point. Basically I feel forced to run Nvidia because most games support them better then ATI but I like ATI cards better for style. Also, is there ANY card out there that supports dual HDMI? Any other thoughts for added parts/bling/whatever are welcome! I'm updating this as the build comes along. Edit - my build was primarily finished in July. I am now working on minor details, but for the most part it is up, running and stable.

The end result, which I have named "Skynet."

Cooler Master Storm Trooper full tower (Red lighting build)
ASUS Crosshair V Formula Z mobo
AMD FX8350 Black Edition 4.0GHz 8 core processor
32GB Patriot Viper RAM 2133mHz

Creative Sound Blaster Zx sound card
Antex 650 Kuhler CPU water cooler
Dual ASUS CD/DVD RW drives

EVGA GeForce GTX 780 3GB PCI-E w/ Dual DVI, HDMI, Display Port

Amazon has it priced at $512.69 with free shipping. EVGA has a great warranty policy. If you buy it make sure you register it. I know it's above $400 but that is what I would go with. 2 cards are just to hot. It all depends on what you want to do with it. If you just want it for gaming this is still over kill.

Yeah, EVGA is awesome with warranties, for sure. Thanks, will look into it. I can probably wait a few months and the price will come down a bit, I mainly want to go dual HDMI because my comp at work is one HDMI one VGA and it drives me bonkers. Can really tell the difference.

Edit to add, the ones I have looked at so far only have one HDMI port and another port that looks like an HDMI but isn't?

Just use the dual dvi for now until you can buy a sister card if that's what you want to do I don't think you will see much of a difference. Use the HDMI for single monitor like watching movies and video work. I don't think your going to see much of a difference.

Gotcha. And yeah, I overkill on every build I do. That's how my old machine lasted 8 years of getting hammered constantly. While I don't have lot of upgrade room on the CPU with AM3+ heading out the door, I think it's going to be a while before the processor is an issue. The main thing I have been enjoying so far is how well Second Life runs on it - I went from 10-15 FPS to 100+ which is massive in a game that has serious issues with vehicle physics due to the world structure. And the main thing I like to do in there is fly planes, so life is a lot better now :D

Hi, if you want to improve the responsiveness of your system, you definetely want to look at having a Solid State Drive (SSD) for your operating system. I have a 64 Gb for my Windows 7, trust me, you won't believe the difference.

You might just have to upgrade the PSU before you can buy the video card :P

Probably will, yeah. The cables on it are the wrong color anyways, and I want to go back to a modular PSU - the one I have in here right now was an emergency replacement on my old blue build, and I miss modular.

Got a nice 24' ASUS 2ms today, will have to get a different computer desk before I get the other one. At least I have it up, running and stable for now. PSU will probably be the next purchase, as I said I need to wait a bit on the GPU - hopefully in 3 months I will be able to get one.

I'd say that Skynet is off to a good start.
